About the artist, Mandy Thody-McDonald...

"All my ceramic sculptures contain something actively alive, usually a person or animal - with the background (if any) as a secondary focus. I like to depict people as elements of a historical continuity, rather than as isolates, and I find myself drawn to 'character' in faces, rather than to 'beauty' per se. I think the face reflects the soul, in humans and animals, so that expressions can convey the intent of the artist as well as a likeness of the subject, though in fact there is not usually a specific model. My paintings depend heavily on line since I draw in a gestural style, so that all the elements of a painting are there before color is applied, and the paint is used mainly for depth and the appeal of bright colors. This has become true of my sculpture as well, I like the bare clay to say what I intend, the glaze if any is for visual appeal, emphasis etc. Each sculpture has developed from a two-dimensional drawing or at least a mental concept of one view (as in a plan view of a house) - the challenge is to develop the third dimension!"
